Samuel and Patrick

During my studies, I met two friends who will be my friends for the rest of my life-Samuel Adams and Patrick Henry. Even though they died many years ago, the testimonies of their lives have reverberated through the history of America for over 250 years.

Samuel Adams was known as the “Father of the Revolution.” He walked the streets of Boston, soliciting support for the revolution. Even though he respected the English form of government, he resented the manner in which it was implemented. Patrick Henry was referred to as the “son of thunder.” We quote his words, “Give me liberty or give me death” but few realize how powerful his words were in shaping the destiny of America.

Without these two great men, it is doubtful that America would have revolted from England, at least at that time. In the last chapter I revisited America's early history. One of my editors asked me why. Churchill and others have said that we can only view the history insofar as we know and understand our past. Therefore, I believe that we must conclude with a view of our beginning. I recently went to Independence Hall in Philadelphia and listened as a guide described the drafting of the Constitution. There were so many different views, it appeared unlikely that they could agree on a Constitution until the aging Benjamin Franklin called for a solemn assembly in prayer. When they finished, many of them, including Washington, stated with some discouragement that the Constitution was the best that they could do at the time! Today it is viewed at the greatest governmental document in the history of man, demonstrating how God directed the course of our nation.

After the constitution was drafted, several of our forefathers, including John Adams, expressed the view that they had given this nation freedom, “if they can keep it.” This is still the message for today. God, through our forefathers, has given us a nation of covenant, founded upon freedom and truth, if we can keep it.
