Is God Dead?
Paul Johnson is an English historian who has written extensively concerning mid-twentieth century history of America and Europe. In his book, The Quest for God, which describes his own personal spiritual journey, he made the following statement: “The most extraordinary thing about the 20th century was the failure of God to die.” I remember the Time magazine cover in 1966 that posed the question, “Is God Dead?” Then, in 1969, another Time magazine queried, “Is God Coming Back to Life?” In my view, these two statements epitomize the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Following the struggles of two world wars, a holocaust and a depression, cynicism was pervasive throughout the world. Many questioned the existence of God or wondered why he did not intervene to prevent such tragic international events. In the midst of such devastating circumstances, a spiritual rebirth began in America simultaneously with a re-birth of the nation of Israel. I view those two re-births as defining events in the history of the world. |
